Remove metadata from a WebP
Drop a WebP file below. This tool reads its RIFF chunk structure in your browser, removes EXIF, XMP and C2PA chunks, fixes the container size, and gives you a cleaned file to download. The image never leaves your device.
What a WebP carries besides pixels
A WebP file is a RIFF container: a header with a total size, followed by chunks, each with a 4-letter type, a length and its data. The VP8X chunk, when present, has flag bits announcing EXIF and XMP chunks further down. Removing those chunks means also rewriting the header's size field.
| Chunk | Carries | Removed |
|---|---|---|
| EXIF | Camera or generator fields, sometimes GPS | Yes |
| XMP | Adobe-style metadata, often a workflow record | Yes |
| C2PA chunk | Content provenance manifest | Yes |
| VP8 / VP8L | The actual image data | Kept, untouched |
This tool removes metadata, it doesn't change pixels. PassReal also processes the pixels.
Questions
Where does a WebP store its metadata
Inside its RIFF container, as separate EXIF and XMP chunks placed after the image data, with a VP8X chunk at the start whose flag bits announce whether they are present. C2PA manifests use the same chunk mechanism.
Does removing metadata break the RIFF container
No, if it is done correctly. Removing a chunk means also rewriting the overall RIFF size field in the file header, otherwise the file is invalid. This tool updates that size field so the result opens normally.
Does this work on both lossy and lossless WebP
Yes. The metadata chunks sit outside the VP8 (lossy) or VP8L (lossless) image chunk, so removing them does not depend on which compression the file uses.
