# How to remove the AI info label from an Instagram post or story

Source: https://passreal.com/how-to/remove-ai-info-instagram

Instagram shows AI info when the file carries AI provenance metadata (C2PA or IPTC fields) or when you declared the content as AI yourself. On a post that is already published, the label usually cannot be edited away. What works is to delete the post, strip the metadata from the original file, check you did not switch on the AI declaration, and upload the clean file again.

## What the AI info label is

AI info is a small tag that Instagram and Facebook show above or near a post.
Tapping it explains that the content may have been made or changed with AI. It
appears on photos, reels, carousels and stories.

The label is not a judgement of your picture. It is a reaction to two inputs.
The first is data inside the file. The second is what you told the app when you
posted. Neither involves a person looking at the image and deciding.

## Why it appears

Meta reads industry markers that generation tools write into their exports. The
two main ones are a C2PA manifest, also called Content Credentials, and the IPTC
digital source type field, which can say that the image came from a trained
model. Tools such as Gemini, ChatGPT and Adobe Firefly add them by default.

Some editing tools write the same fields when they use generative features.
That is why a real photo with an AI-assisted fix can end up with the label.
Our guide on [why Instagram labels a photo AI info](/guides/instagram-ai-label)
goes through the fields one by one.

The second input is your own choice. When you post, the advanced settings can
carry a switch that marks the content as AI. If it is on, the label is shown
because you asked for it.

## Can you remove it from a post that is already live?

Here is the honest answer: usually not by editing the post. The file is already
stored with its fields, and the label was applied when it was read. We do not
know of a setting that lets you strip an automatic label from a published post,
and we will not tell you there is one.

Two things are in your hands. You can check whether your declaration is on, and
you can replace the post. For a story, replacing it is easy, since it expires
anyway. For a post with comments and likes, you lose those, so decide whether
the label matters more than the engagement.

## How to post without the automatic label

Start from the original file, not a screenshot of it. Copy it, then remove the
provenance fields from the copy. ExifTool does most of this with one command.
Run it again on the result to read what remains, and look for C2PA, JUMBF, IPTC
digital source type and XMP tool names.

Then upload the clean copy and leave the AI declaration off only if it does not
apply to the picture. A label you did not set yourself came from the file.
A label that came from your own declaration is a different matter.

## Doing it in one upload

PassReal removes every metadata family in a single pass: C2PA, the IPTC digital
source type, XMP, PNG text chunks and the EXIF software tag. On a Gemini export,
174 markers went down to 0. It also adds camera sensor grain, smooths the high
frequencies, and saves a JPEG with the EXIF of a real phone. SSIM and PSNR are
shown for each image. The first three images are free.

If a public AI image detector flags an image you paid to process, email us within
14 days with the result and we refund the payment in full. The terms are in
section 7 of the [Terms of Service](/terms#guarantee).

## Your duty to disclose

Cleaning a file changes what Instagram can read. It does not change what is
true. If the image is AI-generated, platform rules or local law may ask you to
say so, and that responsibility is yours, not the tool's. Some uses, such as
political ads, are covered by stricter rules than a personal feed.

PassReal is for people who want to control which data leaves their devices and
who stay honest with their audience. If you are unsure, disclose it. A caption
that says an image was made with AI costs nothing, and it avoids a bigger
problem later.

## Questions

### Can I remove AI info from a post that is already published?

Usually not by editing the post. The label comes from the file and from your declaration, so a clean file has to be uploaded as a new post. Delete the old one, then publish again.

### Is it different for a story?

The cause is the same: file metadata and your declaration. A story disappears after a day, so the simplest path is to post a new story with a cleaned file. Reels and carousels follow the same logic.

### Why does my photo have the label when I only edited it with an AI tool?

Many editors and generators write an IPTC digital source type or a C2PA manifest into the export. Instagram reads those standard fields, so an AI-assisted edit can carry the same markers as a fully generated picture.

### Will PassReal remove a watermark such as SynthID?

No. SynthID sits in the pixels and Google says it is built to survive edits and compression. PassReal removes metadata and does not remove visible logos or text. It covers the file fields that Instagram reads, as explained in our guide.

### Do I have to tell people my image is AI-generated?

Platform rules and local law can require it. Cleaning the file does not change that duty, which stays with you. Check Instagram's current rules and the law where you publish before you post.
